Incredible Fourth Quarter for Brentwood Rotarians
|
Before I start my message I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the family of James Defermry. James passed away last month. He was a founding member of the Brentwood Rotary’ as well as a past president. James was a Rotarian for over 55 years. He never missed a meeting. He lived his life by the Rotary moto “Service Before Self”. We know James will be missed however his legacy will live on in the Brentwood Rotary.
On a brighter note, what an exciting quarter it was for our club. We held our 33rd annual Trade Club Dinner on October 18th. It was a huge success, we raised over $13,000. Who would have thought a little get together brought to this club so many years ago would continue to produce such a great event year after year? This year was no exception. Lisa Bass and her planning committee did an incredible job. The delicious food once again was provided by Brentwood Fine Meats. We had a great group led by our President Elect, Fred Ehler plating the food. Then the local Future Farmers of America(FFA) kids served the food. Our entertainment this year was provided by our very own Peter Morrison. His magic and illusions thrilled the crowd. The most satisfying time of the night for me was giving checks to the local organizations. We gave the FFA group a check for $1,000. PAL and the Brentwood Regional Community Chest each received a check for $500. This is why we do what we do as Rotarians, raising money and giving back to our local community. Thank you to all who helped with making Trade Club a success.
Trade Club was not the only thing we did in the month of October. The district conference was held in Concord. The Brentwood Rotary Club was recognized as one of the top clubs on increasing membership. To date our district has grown by 42 members. The Brentwood club has brought in 10 new members. Great job to our Membership Committee!
Finally, in December we provided a pancake breakfast for all those families involved in the Brentwood Regional Community Chest. This is a great event where the entire community gets involved with helping those less fortunate. We served pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee to over 500 deserving families. What a wonderful way to give back.
I wish everyone a happy, safe and prosperous new year. I can’t wait to see what next year holds.
In Service~
Dirk

“Did You Know?” In 1988, Rotary International began it quest to assist in the eradication of the polio virus. Before the beginning of the campaign, about 1,000 children a day were paralyzed by this terrible disease. Who can tell me how many countries today are still polio-endemic as opposed to how many there were when Rotary International began their fight to end the disease? 122 in 1988, 4 in 2008. Whose Foundation recently announced a $100m grant to assist in polio eradication efforts? Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
That’s the only “Did You Know?” from January!

Spotlight: Jim Defremery

Jim is one of Brentwood Rotary Club's founding fathers, and last surviving charter member. He was present on May 7, 1949 for the club's first meeting, which occurred while Harry Truman was still president of the United States. The meeting was held in the Brentwood Hotel, which hardly survives even in memory.
Jim was actually the guiding light behind the club's formation. He recruited the 14 original members when a Concord Rotarian challenged Jim to start a club in Brentwood.
Jim joined Rotary to help people in need. (Plus, he admits that he enjoyed the Reno Train trips.) Jim served as President during 1954/1955 and over the years, at one time or another, has held all board positions. He has six Paul Harris awards to his credit.
Jim's career was in Land Development for 40 plus years. He and Ilene were married in 1935 and had one daughter and two boys. He has six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
